We have some interesting news. The DX Extra show will go to episode 30 and will then have a break whilst we endeavour some extremely exciting podcast specials. Our music show, The Buzz will carry over our pirate logs segment for the interim. We had enormous gratitude for the Pirate Station Special this year. Expect something EVEN better than that.

The Global Emergency Communications Network is currently on 14205, 14215 and on 21360.

One of the most exciting things about shortwave is that amateur radio enthusiasts from around the world can if via their own set-up or relays can assist with the Nepalese crisis  even if not even in the country. Shortwave as we know, can be broadcast into other regions. This is yet another example where this type of technology can make differences to natural disasters. It is such a pity that we are more reliant on other technologies. Shortwave yet again comes to the rescue!

On Saturday April 25th it will mark the ANZAC centenary, 100 years since 1915, we nationally hold dawn services and marches; similar to that of Remembrance Day. In the show we shared this news article that was published this week:

Our Australian major supermarket chain Woolworths “the fresh food people” is in trouble after publishing The “Fresh in Our Memories” website — linking Anzac commemorations to the retailer’s “Fresh Food People” branding tag line — was taken down overnight amid claims that it was in very poor taste.

Veterans’ Affairs Minister Michael Ronaldson weighed in this morning, saying Woolies would not have been given permission for the advertising had it been sought.
Woolworths encouraged members of the public to share stories and profile-style pictures of loved ones affected by or lost to war by uploading images to a website that then branded them with Woolworths logo and the phrase “Lest we Forget 1915-2015. Fresh in our memories.”


The site did not sit well with some Australians — with many taking to social media to slam the campaign as tasteless. The hashtags “#FreshInOurMemories” and “#BrandzacDay” are also gaining momentum.

You would not be the first person to quickly think that is a number station. But what you are hearing is an Emergency Action Message, EAM. In a nutshell that is “preformatted message that directs nuclear-capable forces[1] to execute specific Major Attack Options (MAOs) or Limited Attack Options(LAOs) in a nuclear war. Individual countries or specific regions may be included or withheld in the EAM” The messages are sent in digital format to nuclear-capable major commands via the secure Automatic Digital Network (AUTODIN). Zimbabwe will meet the upcoming deadline from the International Telecommunications Union for transitioning from analog to digital broadcasting, according to the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe. The deadline was put in place in June 2006.
The Chinese company Huawei Technology would implement the digitization program, explained BAZ CEO Obert Muganyura during a media briefing. The reported cost is $125 million. NetOne will receive the datacasting license.
According to a release published by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), Huawei will set up 30 digital transmitters as part of the compliance, as well as studio encoders and head-to-end and satellite links to safely meet the requirements to limit signal interface with neighboring countries after the switch from analog.
Zimbabwe is also planning to digitize existing television studios, content producers and analog radio stations, renew an FM radio transmission network, a Web TV system and an operational and regulatory monitoring system. This is scheduled to take place between July and December 2015.
